Step 1: Self-Preparation — Clarify Needs and Budget

Before stepping into the tailor shop, thinking through the following questions will make subsequent communication much more efficient.

Preparation Area Key Questions & Suggestions
🎯 Occasion Wedding, important business meeting, daily commute, or casual social event? This determines the formality and style of the suit. For example, a wedding might call for a more fashionable peaked lapel, while business settings usually favor the classic notched lapel.
💰 Budget Range Price is usually tied to fabric and construction:
- $200–600: Entry to mid-level, often featuring domestic wool and half-canvas construction. A cost-effective choice.
- $600–1,500+: Mid-to-high end, offering top-tier imported fabrics (e.g., Scabal) and full-canvas construction with finer craftsmanship.
- $1,500 and up: Bespoke level, featuring full handwork and extensive personalization.
👔 Personal Preferences Do you prefer a single-breasted or double-breasted jacket? Double-breasted projects more authority and a vintage feel, while single-breasted with two buttons is the most versatile.
Do you have any unique body traits? Such as sloped shoulders or a prominent abdomen. Inform the tailor in advance so adjustments can be made to the pattern.

🧵 Step 2: Knowledge — Understand the Core Elements

Knowing a few key points will make communication with the tailor much smoother.

  1. Fabric: Determines Quality and Appearance

    • Material: Wool is the top choice for its breathability, crisp drape, and durability. For summer, consider linen or mohair blends; for winter, flannel or cashmere.

    • Super Number: For daily wear, Super 110's to 150's is ideal, balancing softness with wrinkle resistance. Higher numbers (e.g., above 180) are extremely delicate and prone to wrinkling.

  2. Construction: Determines Longevity and Shape

    • Full Canvas: The highest quality, using floating chest canvas for a naturally structured, breathable, and long-lasting garment.

    • Half Canvas: The best value, featuring canvas in the chest and fused material below. The results are nearly as good as full canvas.

    • Fused: The most basic method, using adhesive to bond layers. It can feel stiff and may bubble over time. Generally not recommended.

  3. Style Details: Determine the Final Look

    • Lapel: Notched lapels are the safest, ideal for business; peaked lapels project a stronger presence, perfect for important occasions; shawl lapels are mainly used for formal evening wear.

    • Sleeve Length: Ideally, the shirt cuff should be visible by 0.5–0.6 inches (1–1.5 cm).

    • Jacket Length: Generally, it should be long enough to cover the curve of the buttocks.

✅ Step 3: Choosing a Tailor — Evaluate Service and Process

  1. Look for Professional Service

    • Is the measurement process thorough? A professional tailor should take at least 20 measurements (e.g., neck circumference, shoulder slope, arm circumference). For online services, check if they offer video guidance or a try-on garment service (some will send a fitting garment before final production).

    • Is there a fitting session? High-quality custom services often include a "basted fitting" (also called a "forward fitting") where you try on the half-constructed suit to adjust the fit before final assembly.

  2. Check the After-Sales Policy

    • Are alterations included? Many services offer free alterations within six months to accommodate minor body changes.

    • Is the lead time clearly stated? The typical custom suit lead time is 3 to 8 weeks. Confirm this if you have a deadline.

🗓️ Step 4: Action List — Appointment and Communication

  1. Book an Appointment: To avoid a wasted trip.

  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear the shirt and shoes you plan to wear with the suit. This ensures the sleeve and trouser lengths are measured accurately.

  3. Bring Reference Photos: Showing the tailor a photo of a suit you like is often clearer than describing it.

The more thorough your preparation, the closer the final suit will be to your ideal. Best of luck with your custom suit!
